Climate

The climate in Barbados is generally sunny and warm with brief occasions of intense rain. The summer temperatures hit average highs of 32oC and winters temperatures 28oC. The dry season of the island starts in January and ends in June when the generally wetter conditions start.

The educational system in Barbados is modeled after the British system and one that has produced a high literacy rate over the years. School is compulsory upto the age of 16 and government schools are free at the primary and secondary levels. The country proudly boasts of a literacy rate of 97%.

Time

Barbados is in the Atlantic Time Zone, which is four hours behind Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). It is one hour ahead of Eastern Standard Time; however, the island does not observe daylight-saving time. From April to October, the Eastern time in America is the same as the time in Barbados. From October to April, the East Coast of the United States is one hour behind Barbados.

Visa Entry Requirements

All visitors to Barbados are required to have a valid passport. Nationals of CARICOM, UK, USA, Canada and some Commonwealth countries can travel to Barbados with acceptable proof of identification, like a passport, birth certificate or national ID.

Barbados boasts a pure water supply. It’s pumped from underground sources in the coral rock that covers a vast majority of the island, and it’s safe and ready to drink right away.

American University of Barbados (AUB) offers a balanced medical curriculum comparable to US medical schools and designed to help prepare students to practice medicine in the US, UK and also the Caribbean. The medical sciences curriculum is taught on AUB’s campus in Barbados. The campus is technologically advanced with a new Medical Science Resource center and anatomy lab, both housed in AUB’s newly opened Campus. Students complete their clinical training in affiliated teaching hospitals in the United States and United Kingdom. Sessions commence in January, May, and September, with semester terms of 16 weeks in duration.

PRE-MEDICAL PROGRAM (5.5 YEARS)

Age Requirement
Applicants must be at least 18 years old at the time of admission or by December 31 of the year of admission. Applicants younger than 18 may seek a waiver from the Dean given exceptional prior coursework in addition to fulfilling all of the academic requirements for admission.

Academic Requirements (Barbados, Caribbean, India, UK, etc.)
Five CXC/CSEC or GCE “O” Level subjects in English, Biology, Chemistry, *Mathematics & Physics AND
Three 2-unit CAPE (Biology, Chemistry, *Physics) or three “A” Level subjects (Physics/Math components can be satisfied by CXC/CSEC or “O” Levels)
NOTE: Successful completion of senior secondary school (K-12) for students from India, Pakistan, Nigeria, and most other countries.

OR

IB (equivalent to A-levels)

OR

Associates Degree (undergraduate) equivalency (a WES credentials evaluation is required to determine premedical placement level if some prerequisites are not fulfilled)

Three 2-unit CAPE (Biology, Chemistry, *Physics) or three “A” Level subjects *Physics/Math components can be satisfied by CXC/CSEC or “O” Levels

AND

University or College-level undergraduate coursework with fulfilled pre-medical prerequisites (Note that an Associate Degree (undergraduate) equivalency is deemed acceptable if all prerequisites are fulfilled – a WES evaluation credential evaluation is required as part of the application process).

Academic Requirements (USA)A minimum of 2 academic years of pre-professional post-secondary education (such as a pre-medicine track) including:

2 semesters of General Biology or Zoology with Labs

2 semesters of Inorganic Chemistry (General or Physical) with Labs

2 semesters of Organic Chemistry with Labs

2 semesters of General Physics with Labs

2 college-level math courses (such as Pre-calculus, Calculus, Computer Science, Statistics, etc.)

AND

a minimum of 60 credit hours of undergraduate college or university-level coursework

Academic Requirements (India)

Science Graduates from a recognized university with English as one of the subjects and a minimum of 65% in aggregate in Physics, Chemistry and Biology

Please note the following during the application process:

The language of instruction for all programs is English. Upon formal review, applicants of non-English speaking countries may be asked to submit documentation of proficiency in English (English courses, TOEFL, IELTS or equivalency).

NOTE: Students from non English speaking countries but from English Medium School, do not require TOFEL.

Professional degrees in Nursing, Pharmacy. Podiatry, Allied Health, Public Health, Chiropractic or others will not be accepted as transfer credits. Thus, students with any of these degrees will not be accepted with advanced standing in the MD program. Only credits from an IMED-listed medical school are eligible for transfer credits into the MD program. Acceptance of transfer credits depends upon formal review of course comparability which is at the discretion of the university. Any requests for advanced standing should be made at the time of initial application.

All applicants should note that any fraudulent documents and/or omissions made during the application process may result in withdrawal of acceptance/dismissal

NOTE on U.S. VISAs: Individuals who are not U.S. citizens/permanent residents must obtain a B-1 non-immigrant VISA from the U.S. Embassy or Consulate prior to entering the U.S. to complete the 5th semester and/or clinical training in years 3 and 4. American University of Barbados will provide documentation (letter of attendance, etc.) in support of a B-1 VISA application but is not responsible for obtaining any VISAs for students. As such, AUB claims no guarantee that any student who applies for a B-1 VISA will be given one. It is the student’s responsibility to plan accordingly.

All payments must be remitted to AUB by Draft/wire transfer only. AUB has not authorised any person to collect Tuition fees or any other monies on its behalf. No monies paid to any person other than AUB will be credited to the student’s account with AUB. Tuition fees are subject to change.

Housing, Transportation and Living Expenses

Refund Policy:

Following Refund Policy applies for students who choose to pay the tuition fee in full by semester and yearly basis. Note: This refund policy does not apply to students who choose tuition payment plan option and Transfer students who join the program in the middle of the course.

Withdrawals:

Request for withdrawal from the school of medicine must be addressed to the dean of the academic medicine and must be in writing. Date of withdrawal will be the date, the Dean receives the hand-delivered request or the date on which the notice is received through the mail or other delivery system. Charges such as deposits, fees, printed material, etc. are neither prorated nor refunded. A refund shall only be given where the cause of withdrawal is justified by reason of emergency. The refund shall be given within 90 days of withdrawal. In case of withdrawal prior to matriculation, the University levies an administrative charge of $ 500.

Tuition Refund:

The University tuition refund policy to be applied in the event a continuing student leaves the School after the beginning of the semester is as follows.

Refund application received after 30 days from the date of leaving school will not be eligible for refund.

Attendance of two (2) weeks or less Refund 50%

Textbooks

Textbooks must be purchased. Basic Science curriculum texts cost approximately $300-$500 U.S./per semester and can be purchased through the University bookstore.

Clinical Attire & Medical Kits

Clinical Attire, consisting of lab jackets and scrubs, dissection kits and patient examination kits will be required during your Basic Sciences semesters. These items can be purchased in the University bookstore.

Health Insurance

Health Insurance is mandatory while students are enrolled at American University of Barbados. Students can either enroll in a plan provided by the university or can purchase their own insurance.
